Q. Is the DC One Card going away?
A. Yes. Issuance ends Sept 30, 2025. Existing cards may still be used for DC services that accept them until the printed expiration date.
Q. Is the DC One Card a REAL ID?
A. No. The DC One Card is not a REAL ID. It functions only as secondary identification and isn’t accepted for federal ID checks or air travel.
Q. Is the DC One Card and Kids Ride Free (KRF) card the same?
A. No. They are separate cards with different benefits. KRF cards are distributed by schools; contact your school’s ID administrator.
Q. How do I get a REAL ID or Limited Purpose ID?
A. Visit DMV.dc.gov for required documents and appointments. Some residents (e.g., first-time seniors, unhoused residents) may qualify for fee waivers or assistance.
Q. How do I access Parks & Recreation?
A. Create/verify a DPR account at DPR.dc.gov and obtain a DPR card. Bring a government-issued photo ID to confirm DC residency.
Q. How do I access Library services?
A. Apply for a DCPL library card online or at any branch.
Q. What about students and Kids Ride Free?
A. Students continue to use school-issued ID. KRF continues via schools and is unaffected by this sunset.
Q. What happens to my SmarTrip balance?
A. Register your card at smartrip.wmata.com to protect the balance and transfer it to a new card when needed.
Q. My District of Columbia government-issued ID says it’s a DC One Card, do I need a new ID?
A. No. DC One Card the program, and DC One Card as a moniker on your ID, are different and there is no impact to your government-issued ID.
Q. I lost my (still-valid) DC One Card—replace it?
A. Only if required for a DC service prior to the program’s end on Sept. 30th; otherwise, move to the above alternatives.
Q. Will I be asked for my password or account information?
