Tips & Tasks
- Save drafts early and often. Don’t wait until your content is perfect - save it as a draft so you won’t lose your work if something goes wrong. You can always come back and refine it later.
- Use the revision log message. Every time you save content, there’s usually a field to add a note about what you changed. This is incredibly helpful when you need to track down who changed what and why, especially if multiple people edit the same content.
- Preview before publishing. It’s tempting to hit publish right away, but always preview your content first. What looks good in the editor doesn’t always display the way you expect on the actual page - images might be too large, formatting could be off, or links might not work.
- Understand your content types. Take time to learn which content type to use for different purposes - whether it’s a basic page, article, blog post, or something custom. Using the right content type ensures your content displays correctly and appears where it should on your site.
- Don’t paste directly from Word. When copying content from Microsoft Word or other word processors, paste it as plain text first (usually there’s a “paste as plain text” button in the editor) or clean up the formatting afterward. Otherwise you’ll bring in hidden formatting code that can break your page layout or cause inconsistent styling.
- Filter your search results. From the Drupal directory, use “Content > Filter” to find specific content types that you’re looking for.
- Avoid uploading duplicate images. When adding images or documents in content, insert from Media Library to avoid uploading duplicates.
- Remove old files. Remove before you replace. When replacing documents (PDF, Excel, Word, etc.) send a request to your editor to remove all previous revisions of the content item in question. This ensures the older versions do not appear in search results.
- Stuck? If you get stuck: take a look at the previous/published versions of the same types of content. For example: if you’re trying to add an image to the rotator and it’s not working, look at a published one to compare the fields to see what's missing.
These simple habits will save you from a lot of headaches and help maintain a cleaner, more consistent website.
