Remote Work Options and Guidance

Remote Work Options

The Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) is working hard to ensure you can work effectively away from the office and as securely as possible.

Just Need Email?
Have VPN?
*You do not need access to VPN to log-in to your email. If you do not have a VPN account and use the button directly above, you will not be able to access your email account in that browser.

Levels of Access

Your device and connection will determine your level of access to the District Network. For example:
  • WORK DEVICE + VPN: If the user is using a work device and has a VPN account, we will automatically connect that user to the network if they have an up to date antivirus.
  • WORK DEVICE + NO VPN: If the user has a work device, but does not have a VPN account, the same link will install a VPN account for the user, check to ensure up to date antivirus and then connect the user to the network. (Once the VPN account is installed, the time to connect will be significantly quicker.)
  • PERSONAL DEVICE + VPN: If the user has a personal device with up to date antivirus software (For Windows | For Mac), when they click the personal device remote work link, they will be connected to the network through their web browser.
  • PERSONAL DEVICE + NO VPN: If the user has a personal device and doesn’t use the remote work VPN access, they will still be able to access some systems.

Levels of Access

Please see the below chart for some examples of what remote workers will be able to access depending on their set up:

Table of Apps Accessible via VPN

Ask your team members to test their access from home. Please ask them to make you aware of any issues. Use COVID19.octo.dc.gov to report issues with VPN accounts.

Remote Work Guidance

Some quick reminders about how to securely work from home:

  • Use the DC Government Remote Work site, available at start.dc.gov, to securely connect to the DC Government network

  • Please test your ability to access the DC Government network remotely using your work or personal device (based on your agency guidance) and report any issues to your agency IT lead or INSERT.

  • Please continue working safely online, especially remotely. Check out ready.dc.gov/cyber for further information

  • You can do work, even if you aren’t connected to the network.

  • The same acceptable use policy applies when connected to the DC Government network from home, when creating, accessing and saving DC Government data from home – whether you are using your work or personal device.

  • Please connect to the network once every 5 days using your work device to avoid having issues access the network remotely

  • Network access and technical support for employees using personal devices without using the VPN Service will be limited if available at all

  • Technical issues with personal devices will not be supported by OCTOhelps Helpdesk

  • Personal devices must have an anti-virus program (For Windows | For Mac) installed to enable VPN

  • Personal devices will have access to a limited set of District applications and systems

  • Access to sensitive data from personal devices is restricted
