District Government Enhances Online Leaf Collection Map

Thursday, November 8, 2012
The upgraded site includes completion dates for finished areas and the most current collection boundaries

Washington, DC - The District of Columbia Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Rob Mancini announced today enhancements to the Department of Public Works’ (DPW) online Leaf Collection Map. The upgraded site includes completion dates for finished areas and the most current collection boundaries

The Office of the Chief Technology Officer’s (OCTO) Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team created the interactive map using the District’s ArcGIS 10.1 infrastructure. This platform integrates desktop, server, mobile and web applications, and simplifies sharing of geographic information. The end result is that users can access this data easier and more efficiently.

We are constantly exploring ways to leverage technology to improve the lives of District residents, businesses and visitors,” said CTO Rob Mancini. “I commend our GIS team for further enhancing this great tool and finding innovative ways to upgrade the services of our partnering agencies.

Each fall season, DPW collects leaves from residential neighborhoods to reduce potential accidents and injuries resulting from slipping on wet leaves. By collecting these leaves, the District prevents catch basins (storm drains) from clogging and causing street flooding during heavy rains. DPW collects between 8,000 and 10,000 tons of leaves between November and January each year. In addition to the online leaf collection map, DPW mails the annual leaf collection schedule to residents who receive trash and recycling services.

The newly enhanced leaf collection website allows DPW to provide residents critical information in real time,” said DPW Director, William O. Howland. “Not only does this data improve our ability to communicate important updates, but it also offers another option for residents to obtain information.
